Yisa Balloon Festival
The moors south of Yisa mark the edge of the city proper and the further inland you venture the more completely the landscape is completely swallowed by overgrowning moss and thick peat bogs. While it makes the landscape fairly inhospitable when it comes to settling it does however serve as a perfect staging ground for the annual Yisa Balloon Festival. Huge hot air balloons of every imaginable shape blossom over the landscape inflating and drifting high into the air- their internal torches shooting gouts of flame into their massive sheets which at night illuminate the whole of Yisa like giant floating lanterns. Yisa itself is not well known but it’s festival draws in millions of tourists each year from everywhere in the world who come to see a sky completely filled with hot air balloons.
This map was a real challenge. Sometimes as an artist there are times when you can see the shortcuts and the easy ways to do something and you make a personal decision that every single element for a piece will be done the hard way. That's what this map was. I made 30 something balloons and half of them are hardly visible in the background- Laid out the entire landscape (multiple times for each zoom out) which I mostly ended up covering in clouds. Haha. But ultimately I think this came out to be one of the best maps I’ve ever made. Super proud of this one.
